Mastery at Ankermoor -

Ankermoor delivers a high quality mathematics curriculum using a mastery approach. We are guided by the national curriculum and use White Rose Maths and the Primary Stars programme to support our delivery. We are a mixed-age school so we adapt our learning sequences where necessary to suit the needs of our pupils. We aim for all pupils to develop a sound understanding of maths rather than being able to memorise key procedures or resort to rote learning. The end goal and expectation is for all pupils to have acquired the fundamental facts and concepts of maths for their year, attaining a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. We strive for every child to use their knowledge of a concept to solve a variety of unfamiliar problems, and undertake complex reasoning, using the appropriate mathematical vocabulary.

Curriculum Intent: Retention of Knowledge

MATHEMATICS INTENT

We intend to build a Mathematical curriculum that:

  • deepens understanding, confidence, competence and retention of knowledge in maths
  • creates a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress
  • allows children to be a part of inspiring and engaging lessons that will give them a range of opportunities to develop an OPEN-MINDEDNESS in their approach to mathematics
  • gives each pupil a chance to demonstrate high ASPIRATIONS of themselves as mathematicians and develop the power of RESILIENCE and determination when faced with mathematical challenges
  • recognises that mathematics underpins much of our daily lives and therefore is of overriding importance for children to become successful in the next stages of their learning
  • makes connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems
  • provides equal opportunities for children to apply their mathematical knowledge to other subjects (cross-curricular links)
  • is in line with the expectations in the National Curriculum 2014.

MATHEMATICS IMPLEMENTATION

Mathematics is planned, following an approach in line with the EYFS Framework and KS1 and KS2 National Curriculum. Our planning is informed (but not dictated) by the White Rose Maths Hub scheme. Teachers can use or adapt activities for fluency, reasoning and mastery of tasks within each learning journey. The calculation policy is used within school to ensure a consistent approach to teaching the four operations over time. At the start of each new topic, key vocabulary is introduced and revisited regularly to develop language acquisition, embedding as the topic progresses. We also complete a pre-assessment to show progress throughout a unit of learning.  All lessons begin with a short assessment (White Rose Maths flashback) to support retrieval practice and develop long-term memory.

MATHEMATICS IMPACT

Pupils will make at least expected progress in Maths from their last point of statutory assessment or from their starting point in EYFS or KS1. Pupils will use their Mathematical knowledge and skills, in all curriculum areas, to enable them to have a deep understanding, confidence, competence and retention of knowledge in the subject.  Children will demonstrate a quick recall of facts and procedures. This includes the recollection of their times tables and the opportunity to develop the ability to recognise relationships and make connections in maths lessons. Mathematical concepts are mastered when a child can show it in multiple ways, using the mathematical language to explain their ideas, and can independently apply the concept to new problems in unfamiliar situations.

TT-Rockstars

When it comes to times tables, speed AND accuracy are important. The more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations. Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help pupils master the times tables! To be a Times Table Rock Star you need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12×12 in less than 3 seconds!  This is particularly important in year 4 as the children will take their statutory Multiplication check.

All children from years 2 to 6 have a username and password so they can also access this website from home. If they lose this, please see their class teacher.
How to play

There are 4 different game modes, which you can try.

Game Modes
Single Player

Garage – The questions will only come from the times tables the teacher has set for the week. As pupils start to answer questions, TT Rock Stars works out which facts they take longer on and will give them more of these questions to answer. The Garage is best for getting quicker at a few facts. Players get 10 coins per question.

Studio – The questions in the Studio can be anything from 1×1 up to 12×12.
TT Rock Stars calculates the mean speed from their last 10 games in the Studio and translates into a Rock Status.

They earn 1 coin per question and the Studio is the place for them to set their best time across all the tables.

Multiplayer

Rock Arena – The Arena allows players to compete against all other members of their Band (their Band mates would need to join the same game in order to compete together).
A new Arena game starts every 15 seconds and once the clock starts they race to answer more questions than the others. In the Arena, questions will only come from the times tables the teacher has set for the week, similar to the Garage. They earn 1 coin per correct answer.

Rock Festival – The Rock Festival games are open to players from around the world. Like the Arena, there is no limit to the number of players who can join a game; however, unlike the Arena, questions are selected at random from 1×1 to 12×12. Pupils might choose the Rock Festival if they were playing at home (and therefore couldn’t easily synchronise playing against a classmate) or wanted to compete against others not in their Band. They earn 1 coin per correct answer.

Numbots

Maths At Home — Bedford Drive Primary School

NumBots is an online game and playing little and often will significantly improve your child's recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts. These are critical foundations in Maths so we are excited by the impact NumBots will have.

In order to get the best out of NumBots, children should regularly play for shorts bursts.

Game Types

  1. Story Mode - the emphasis is on the learning the ideas and concepts behind the addition and subtraction by using shapes and diagrams.
  2. Challenge Mode - the emphasis is more on speed of recall of key facts, like number bonds to 10, doubling small numbers or adding and taking away in your head.
